Here we give you a quick overview of the towns of Axarquia, from its capital, Velez-Malaga, to the smallest municipalities, such as Iznate or Canillas. From Velez-Malaga, near Nerja, there are religious monuments to visit, not only Catholic, but also Evangelist and Buddhist. We should also mention the Fiestas de San Miguel that is celebrated in October. Velez-Malaga has a tiny, well known pueblo called Torre del Mar, a tourist attraction with infrastructures such as hotels, pretty beaches, and lots of services during high season.
Traveling through Axarquia, you will pass through Velez-Malaga to Torrox, a locality of only 20,000 inhabitants of which many are German. This municipality is divided between the interior and the coast, and the monuments here to visit are the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion, or the Ermita de Nuestra Senora de las Nieves.
Rincon de la Victoria is another locality in this place near Nerja. It is a municipality of over 30,000 inhabitants. The Yacimiento Romano de la Torre de Benegalbon lies here. This is the closest municipality to the city of Malaga.
Next is Frigiliana, a town of only 3000 inhabitants. Algarroo is next, with 5000 people, and is a town that has been conserved since the time of the Arabs. La Ermita de San Sabastian, or the Iglesia de Santa Ana, built in the 16th Century, are the most visited monuments. Next comes Sedella, with only around 200 inhabitants.
Other small towns also exist in Axarquia, such as Iznate, Benajarafe, Cedilla, Canillas del Aceituno, Alcaucin, Colmenar, and Competa, amongst others..... all of them put together total about 5000 inhabitants. |
