Nerja is a locality that belongs to Malaga, in the extreme east of the Coast bordering with Granada. It is a tourist locality with a high number of foreign residents. Mostly english making the total population a total of 20,000 inhabitants. It borders with Almunecar to it´s east, Torrox to it´s west, Frigiliana to the north and the Mediterrenean sea to it´s south. Nerja is a tourist city integrated with the region of Axarquia. It has various attractive elements, in which we must mention the Caves in Nerja. The are known internationally and have a great historic valor. The ski resort of Sierra Nevada in Granada, is only 2 hours away. The international airport in Malaga is about an hour distance. This town has easy access to arrive there, and also offers plenty of different types of accomodations depending on your budget and the location you prefer.
The caves in Nerja are one of the most important cultural destinations that tourists visit after the Prado Art Museum in Madrid. You cannot put a price to the paintings, and even though they were recently discovered in 1959, they are a historic reference point in the south of the penninsula.
Nerja is also sun and beach, with a coastline that is not overly occupied like that of the rest of the western part of the Costa del Sol. It has urban beaches like those of Burriana or the Playazo, as well as nudist beaches like Alberquillas. Nerja is culture, with it´s highly visited caves, as well as history with its tower named Europe´s Balcony by King Alfonso the 12th in 1885. Nerja is also memories, since in this locality the famous spanish series of Verano Azul was filmed. Nerja is also nature with two important natural parks; Sierra Tejeda, Alama and Almijara, shared with Granada and the Park of Acantilados de Maro. Nerja is also a location with a subtropical climate very similar to the Coast of Granada.
As to what it´s gastronomy is concerned, Nerja is a municipality costasoleño (sunnycoastal) that is known for it´s mediterrenean diet as well as for the care of it´s fruits of the sea. Stews, fresh fish and seafood, and vegetables are the main ingredients in this corner of the Region of Axarquia.
Nerja is simply the last corner in the western side of the Costa del Sol, but not for this reason is it less beautiful. It is a mixture of the Costa del Sol and the Tropical Coast from Granada. These ingredients make it a unique municipality. It is also a first class tourist destination in which you will not have problems finding an accomodation. |
